Dominic was my grandfather. He was quite the character, full of ideas and energy. He used to tell me lots of stories about his wild adventures.

Dominic grew up poor in Philadelphia. As a child, he told me used to fill bottles with spring water from a local park that had a spring and sell it out of the back of a horse-drawn cart. When he was older, he worked in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, then in the Panama Canal Zone for the Panama Canal Company in the early 1940s, bringing several of his children and wife with him. They lived in Pedro Miguel, and he did tool and die work and also worked as a lockmaster for the Pedro Miguel Lock. After the war he was a radio operator for Pan Am for a time, traveling the world. He and his family moved to Chicago, and he found work as a machinist for Curtiss Candy Company, then Central Scientific Co. until his retirement at 82.

Dominic also played the cello, and had fond remembrances of playing with the orchestra on Lemon Hill. He met his wife Rose Inke through his music; Rose played piano professionally as well.
